President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign is spending $50 million by the end of June. This includes its first television ad highlighting Donald Trump’s felony conviction. The ad aims to make Trump’s legal troubles a significant issue in the upcoming election.
Ads targeting key voters
The ad campaign includes over $1 million for media targeting Black, Hispanic, and Asian American voters. The ad, titled “Character Matters,” mentions Trump’s conviction on 34 felony counts in a New York hush money case. It will be shown on general market television, streaming devices, and cellphones in battleground states, as well as on national cable.
The ad also notes that Trump was found liable for sexual assault and financial fraud in other cases. Trump faces felony charges in three additional criminal cases, though none may go to trial before the November election. The ad contrasts Trump, described as "a convicted criminal," with Biden, portrayed as "a president who's fighting for your family."
Biden often speaks about Trump’s felony convictions, criticizing the former president for claiming the case against him was politically motivated. Biden argues that it’s irresponsible to suggest the verdict was rigged just because it was unfavorable.
Biden's son Hunter was also convicted of three felony charges related to a 2018 gun purchase. Biden stated he would respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal.
Highlighting policy differences
Biden’s reelection strategy includes emphasizing Trump’s policy proposals and energizing Democrats and independent voters. Producing an ad focusing on Trump’s conviction indicates Biden’s renewed effort to highlight Trump’s legal issues. Biden campaign spokesman Michael Taylor said, “We will make sure every day we remind voters how Joe Biden is fighting for them, while Donald Trump runs a campaign focused on himself.”

Trump has denied any wrongdoing and claimed, without evidence, that Biden or Justice Department officials orchestrated the New York case against him for political reasons. Trump’s campaign spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, said the Biden administration had “weaponized the justice system against President Trump." She asserted that the contrast between Trump and Biden will be clear in the debates.
